I wanted to leave a comment about a debate you all had in a Season 1 podcast--either "The Puppet Show" or "Nightmares." Forgive me if this question has already been answered; I'm just now listening to "Prophecy Girl" (as I type this, actually). Anyway, you guys were all wondering why Buffy didn't have a Watcher when she was only a Potential, before she was Chosen. You're right that Potentials usually have Watchers, and start receiving training when they're pretty young. In the movie, Merrick explains this to Buffy--she had a distinctive birthmark that marks all potential slayers, but it was removed when she was little, so the Watcher Council couldn't find her until she received the slayer powers. That bit of mythology never comes up again, but that's how it was explained in the movie, and they never say otherwise in the series.
