Anne
Unable to deal with the pain caused by being forced to kill Angel, Buffy heads to L.A. to try and leave it all behind…Sunnydale, her friends, even her name. There, she goes by “Anne” and works in a diner, waiting tables. But trouble has a way of finding Buffy, and this time trouble comes in the form of Lily (who was known as Chanterelle in “Lie To Me” last season). Lily has lost her boyfriend, Rickie, and has enlisted the help of Buffy to find him. Meanwhile, the scoobies in Sunnydale learn that it ain’t easy to slay vampires without a slayer. Let’s just hope Buffy can escape that creepy forced labor hell demension to get back to Sunnydale and give them all a hand once more.
Directed by: Joss Whedon
Original Air Date: 29 September 1998
Guest Stars:
Julia Lee (Lily)
Trivia:
- We learn in this episode that “Anne” is Buffy’s middle name. The Buffy Trivia Guide mentions that there is a chain of lingerie stores in England named Ann Summers, which I thought was funny enough to mention. =)
- According to IMDB, this is the first episode where they do the “Previously, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer” thing at the beginning. Really? How did I miss that?
Quotes:
Larry: “If we can focus, keep discipline, and not have quite as many mysterious deaths, Sunnydale is gonna *rule!*”
Key Events:
- Buffy returns to Sunnydale, after having been away for several months.

Yay! You’re back! I seriously got really excited when I opened my iTunes and it started downloading something. Haven’t listened to it yet but I’ll post back when I’m done. Yay!
Hey, Watchercast! I just downloaded your new ep and started listening to it…there’s a 2 minute spot of “dead air” after Troy’s intro until we hear Jason talk. Just thought you should know!
Thanks for the heads up Jords, forgot to enable the theme song track when I did the mixdown. That’s what I get for doing it while feeding the baby. All fixed now.
Oh and check out Kristen’s TWC pimped out guitar case! (From her comment over on the Goodies page.)

Great podcast. You guys do an awesome job!
I was thinking about the don’t tell mom discussion in regards to Joyce and Buffy’s slayer calling and I was thinking about two other things which are basically as you said Buffy is very resistant and has been all about the normal life thing so I guess Buffy felt if her parents knew, her life would change somehow and her loved ones would be in danger. Buffy is kind of a on her own terms kind of person so I could see how she probably told her watcher she would help only if she got a chance to keep her normal life, do her own thing etc, etc. She was the only slayer there was so they probably had to listen. Also, in season 6 Buffy mentions when she saw her first vampire her parents put her in an asylum or something until she stopped talking about it and they let her out. So maybe it was also as you guys said that basically Buffy and her watcher agreed it was best to keep quiet or Buffy would get taken away.
I loved the whole podcast even with the singing
and I will check into that show you mentioned. It sounds interesting.
P.S. Are you still going to do your Dollhouse podcast? I would love to hear your thoughts on that show.
I loved the Twilight ranting, although you do realize all of Edward’s “girlfriends” will be angry at you, right?
Good show. I think I’d give Anne 3 Mr. Pointy’s too.
Sorry for commenting twice, but I also wanted to add that I didn’t like Buffy first either. I unfortunately saw a really bad episode first, which only furthered my theory that BtVS was about some ditzy girl in California. Thankfully I later saw a really good episode and decided to give it a second chance.
mi no like twilight much!!!!!!
great to hear you guys break into the third season–enjoyable as always… the Chanterelle/Lily/Anne stuff is one of my favourite little mini-plots in the Whedonverse… a very interesting progression there, achieved over a space of six or seven years!
I agree that this episode is only middling–but I do think it did a nice job of bridging the gap between seasons 2 and 3…
also, like Kathleen, I love the Gandhi line…

Another great podcast guys! I hope there won’t be a too big of a wait for the next one. And congratulations for your new baby!
And yes you actually have listeners in Finland too. Or at least one.
Yay! Congratulations on the new little one, you must be very proud. How about long sleeved “Watchercast” onesies with elbow patches? My watcher in training would wear one! (Sawyer, 9 months old.) Great to have you back, watchercast. You made my workday.
Hi! This is Tristen! I’m Hillary’s oldest son. If you made a watcher cast T shirt, I would wear it to school. I start 7th grade next week. I like your show, thanks for making it! Yeah Buffy!
Hey guys so glad you’re back ive missed you!! (btw cannot wait until the doll watchercast either!!) i have been thinking about an ongoing theme that you often discuss, and that is the dusting of the mr pointys. and ive noticed whilst re-watching the dvds for about the 10 billionth time that the pointys tend to stick around if they are taken out of the vamp before they dust, and tend to go if they are left in the vamp as the vamp goes from ashes to ashes, which saves cordy from an early impailing in this ep.!! congrats on the new watcher in the mix and cant wait until the next one, btw being human is brilliant, and as a english girl whos seen the lot i can only tell u its gonna get a whole lot better than the first ep!! xx
Great podcast! Are you still doing them live? Because if you are could you give like a heads up when you are planning on doing it, because it would be really cool to watch. I just checked out “Being Human” and watched the first episode. Great show, thanks for recommending it! Congrats Jason and Shannon on baby Seth!
Congratulations on the baby! I ride to school on a bus with three other people, and we never talk to eachother. When you started talking about Longaburgers, I burst out laughing, and everyone stared at me. I love your podcast, and I can’t wait for the next one!
Congratulations on the new little watcher!
You guys continue to produce an awesome podcast!
Thanks for the recommendation and discussion of Being Human. I’ve been watching it every night for the last few days. Very cool show! I’m going to recommend it to a bunch of my friends; the same ones who convinced me to watch Buffy in the first place.
For the record – I didn’t like Twilight either. I read it, thought it was bad, and didn’t even go near the movie.
Something I thought you might have discussed for the Anne episode was the big throwing knife Buffy uses – the “Hunga Munga”.
So I googled Longaburgers baskets and i get their website and even though there is nothing wrong with the site… it has an evil overtone to it cause I have connected it to hell, like a wolf in sheeps clothing.
So glad you’re back. Congratulations on the baby. I always look forward to you’re podcasts, all of you do a great job and I look forward to more in the future.
What I think was kind of cool in ‘Anne’ was that when Oz threw the stake it obviously didn’t hit its target, but when Buffy threw the blade at one of the bad guys in hell it was right on target. So it does work just with a Slayer behind the throw.
Awesome episode, gang! Temporal Disparity FTW! Demon basket-weavers FTW!
