Buffy goes out on a date with the much sought-after Owen, but a vampire-related emergency arises, forcing her to take him along to the local mortuary. Meanwhile, the Master’s brethren await the coming of the Anointed One, who Buffy believes she has killed… but she’s in for a big (or rather small) surprise.

Directed by: David Semel
Original Air Date:31 March 1997

Guest Stars:
Andrew J. Ferchland (The Anointed One)
Christopher Wiehl (Owen)

Trivia:

  • Giles is knocked out for the second time
  • The Buffy house was originally shot on location in Torrance CA. Later the entire house, interiors and front and back exteriors were built on a sound stage. If you compare some of the shots in this episode with the later episodes you’ll see the dinning room seems to move.
  • First time a vampire is dusted and leaves something behind.
  • Geoff Meed, the ‘Pork & Beans’ vampire, also played Mag, one of the biker-demons in season six’s Bargaining, Part One and Two.

Quotes:

The Master:“…and one of the brethren shall go out hunting the night before and get himself killed because he couldn’t wait to finish his job before he ate. Oh wait” *chokes minion* “…that’s not written anywhere.”

Buffy: “Two points for the slayer while the watcher has yet to score”

Xander: “So Buffy, how’d the slaying go last night?”
Buffy: “Xhander!”
Xander:“I mean… how’d the laying go. NoIDon’tMeanThatEither.”

Cordelia : “Hello, salty goodness.” (upon seeing Angel)

Key Events:

  • Cordelia sees angel for the first time
  • A student comes into the library to actually get a book
  • Buffy actually read, or at least looked at the pictures, in one of the watcher books and remembered the symbol on the ring

Hi, thanks for the kind comments about The Buffy & Angel Trivia Guide – glad you like the site! Have to agree with Cat about Buffy’s fashion in NKABOTFD. V. bad indeed.

  • Jessica:

First of all, thanks for the podcast. I’ve been a subscriber for a while but have only begun to actually listen in the last week. I really do enjoy it and appreciate the time commitment to the show. I have a couple of quick comments. In this episode, I noticed that the audio was kind of shaky. I did hear something about Skype to Cat, so maybe that was the reason, but I wanted to let you know anyway. Also I heard a comment about Xander and his “Porn Star” shirt. I thought this was kind of funny too, especially because of his foray into exotic dancing as cryptically revealed to Buffy in “The Freshman” in Season Four. That’s all I have for now! Thanks again!

Great podcast! Just a fun little bit of random, useless trivia…the costume design at this time was by Susanna Puisto before the one and only Cynthia Bergstrom, who is responsible for the bulk of Buffy’s costume design over the years, took over for the remainer of the seasons until 2002. Interestingly enough Susanna Puisto is also the costume designer for Alyson Hannigan’s current show How I met your Mother! Thank goodness for IMDB, it’s a trivia junkie’s paradise! Looking forward to the next podcast as we bid farewell to Principal Flutie:( The next episode should be full of fun stuff to chat about I really love how you combine Angel and Buffy trivia, this is really an amazing website, I have been in Buffy withdrawl for some time, so thanks for giving me something new to revive my obsession!

  • Kiriel:

It says in the begining that this is the 5th episode in your podcasts “watchercast”. iTunes only has one. This site only has two – “Teacher’s Pet” and “Never kill a boy on the first date.” No other site I have investigated has more than the two. Where are the other three?

Wait, podcastpickle has all five. You should update your feeds or whatever to get all the episodes. It is confusing. Most confusing is iTunes and your own site not having the full list.

  • Kiriel-
We’re looking into why not all of the episodes are showing up in iTunes. If you click on the link at the bottom of our site that reads “BTVS Season One” You will see all the podcasts we’ve done so far for the first season.

  • I had a blast with Jason. I can’t wait to come back. (hint hint)

    Cat

    :D

  • Paul Reubens is Pee Wee Herman, and darn it the orignal BtVS movie has Donald Southerland as Merrik the watcher (I’ve got a serious admiration for Donald Southerland– I never forgive TV M*A*S*H* for having ALAN ALDA!?! WTH?). His dry deliveries are well worth it. Giles owes much to Merrik (who might have wanted to make barrels, I think, LOL).

ANYWAY, heh, Just started listening and I really rather like it. Thanks for sharing this. Definitely have Cat back. I love the heck out of her.

  • Interestingly enough, “Owen” (rather, the actor who plays him) is now toiling in obscurity, currently in rotation as the husband on an Ortho Weed-Be-Gone commercial that HGTV is overkilling :)
