• The demon coming out of the Hellmouth at the end of “Prophecy Girl” was supposed to be frightening, however, seeing as how most mid-season replacements don’t have that big a budget, Joss had to make do with several people each wearing a “tentacle” costume and wiggling around.
• This is the first Buffy episode directed by Joss Whedon.

• The Buffy house was originally shot on location in Torrance CA. Later the entire house, interiors and front and back exteriors were built on a sound stage. If you compare some of the shots in this episode with the later episodes you’ll see the dinning room seems to move.

• Geoff Meed, the ‘Pork & Beans’ vampire, also played Mag, one of the biker-demons in season six’s Bargaining, Part One and Two.

The unaired pilot stared a different principal and a different Willow.

The High School that was used for Sunnydale High is Torrance High School. The courtyard seen throughout the series is actually the Senior Patio. Uber-Buffy fans will also note that there is no ‘bell tower’, the one where Johnathan was confronted by Buffy. The school is very popular with film makers as it has been used in all of the following:

• The Wild Life
• Not Another Teen Movie
• Bring It On
• Whatever It Takes
• Cursed
• Less Than Zero

The area around Torrance High did experience a real earthquake in 1933, a fact that made it’s way into the story of The Master.

The school charged around $7,000 a day for filming.
