Never Kill a Boy on the First Date

Buffy goes out on a date with the much sought-after Owen, but a vampire-related emergency arises, forcing her to take him along to the local mortuary. Meanwhile, the Master’s brethren await the coming of the Anointed One, who Buffy believes she has killed… but she’s in for a big (or rather small) surprise.

Directed by: David Semel
Original Air Date:31 March 1997

Guest Stars:
Andrew J. Ferchland (The Anointed One)
Christopher Wiehl (Owen)

Trivia:

  • Giles is knocked out for the second time
  • The Buffy house was originally shot on location in Torrance CA. Later the entire house, interiors and front and back exteriors were built on a sound stage. If you compare some of the shots in this episode with the later episodes you’ll see the dinning room seems to move.
  • First time a vampire is dusted and leaves something behind.
  • Geoff Meed, the ‘Pork & Beans’ vampire, also played Mag, one of the biker-demons in season six’s Bargaining, Part One and Two.

Quotes:

The Master:“…and one of the brethren shall go out hunting the night before and get himself killed because he couldn’t wait to finish his job before he ate. Oh wait” *chokes minion* “…that’s not written anywhere.”

Buffy: “Two points for the slayer while the watcher has yet to score”

Xander: “So Buffy, how’d the slaying go last night?”
Buffy: “Xhander!”
Xander:“I mean… how’d the laying go. NoIDon’tMeanThatEither.”

Cordelia : “Hello, salty goodness.” (upon seeing Angel)

Key Events:

  • Cordelia sees angel for the first time
  • A student comes into the library to actually get a book
  • Buffy actually read, or at least looked at the pictures, in one of the watcher books and remembered the symbol on the ring

Teacher’s Pet

Xander falls for a new substitute teacher in school called Miss French, who, amazingly, seems to like him too. It turns out she’s a man-eating Praying Mantis in human form and is after Xander’s virgin sperm for fertilization. No, really. Xander is saved by Buffy, but his pride is lost somewhere in the process

Directed by: Stephen Cragg
Original Air Date:25 March 1997

Guest Stars:
Ken Lerner (Principal Bob Flutie)
Musetta Vander (Natalie French)

Trivia:

  • Xander reveals to Mrs. French that his middle name is Lavelle
  • The accent that Mrs. French has is South African, not ‘The Land of Sexy’ as stated in the podcast
  • Mrs. French received a split vote between “Smoking hot” and “Meeeh” in this episode of the podcast
  • A serial box can be seen displaying a promotion for the movie “The Mask” in the grocery bags Mrs. French is carrying

Quotes:

Xander: “It’s funny how the Earth never opens up and swallows you when you want it to.”

Giles: “Recording bat sonar is something soothingly akin to having one’s teeth drilled.”

Key Events:

  • This is the episode where Angel gives Buffy his jacket
  • It’s established that Xander is a virgin
  • There are somethings that even vampires are afraid of
  • It becomes obvious that Willow has feelings for Xander, if it wasn’t already obvious
