Angelus has murder on his mind and Buffy’s friends and family are his targets. Jenny Calendar is still on the outs with the scooby gang but gives Giles a spell book containing a ritual to keep Angelus out of the their homes, all the while she is secretly working on her own “special project”—a computer translation of the ancient Gypsy Ritual of Restoration, the spell which originally gave Angelus his soul back. She succeeds, but Drusilla senses Jenny’s intentions and Angelus pays Jenny a visit to destroy all her work and put an end to her life. With extra flair, Angelus uses his sick and twisted abilities to torture Giles. Though devastated as well by Jenny’s death, Buffy stops Giles from getting himself killed seeking revenge on Angelus. By the time Jenny is laid to rest, Buffy understands the full consequences of allowing Angelus to continue his reign of terror and finds herself, finally, ready to slay him.

<itunes:summary>There's a werewolfnbsp; stalking Sunnydale and Buffy and the gang discover that it's one of their own. Buffy tries to protect Sunnydalenbsp; from the beast's appetite, and protect the nocturnal beast from a werewolf bounty hunter who doesn't care that his trophy is human 27 days a month. Angelus starts some trouble. Willow convinces Oz she still wants to see him, despite everything.

Directed by: Bruce Seth Green
Original Air Date: January 27th, 1998
Guest Stars:

	Seth Green as Oz
	Camila Griggs as Gym Teacher
	Jack Conley as Cain
Larry Bagby as Larry Blaisdell (as Larry Bagby III)
	Megahn Perry as Theresa

[edit]
Trivia:

In the beginning of the episode, Oz fixates on the cheerleading trophy that contains Amy's mom from the first season episode, "Witch".
Gilesrsquo; first car seen on the show was an ancient silver Citroen, first seen in "The Witch". The license plate was 2GPU947. During the filming of "Phases" the car refused to start so some members of the Buffy crew had to push the car from behind. They can be seen through the rear window in one scene.

Quotes:
Willow: "Well, I like you. You're nice, and you're funny. And you don't smoke. Yeah, okay, werewolf, but that's not all the time. I mean, three days out of the month I'm not much fun to be around either."

Cordelia: ldquo;Sorry, we havenrsquo;t all perfected that phony lsquo;girl next doorrsquo; bit.rdquo;
Willow: ldquo;You could be the girl next door, too. If Xander lived next to a brothel!rdquo;

Key Events:

Oz becomes a werewolf in this episode, a defining characteristic of his character for the remainder of the series.
Zander discovers that Larry's misogynist ways are a smoke screen...Larry is gay and he thinks Zander is also gay.

Quotes:

Buffy: “It was terrible. I moped over you for months. Sitting in my room listening to that Divinyls song ‘I Touch Myself’…Of course, I had no idea what it was about.”

Buffy: “Does it ever get easy?”
Giles: “You mean life?”
Buffy: “Yeah. Does it get easy?”
Giles: “What do you want me to say?”
Buffy: “Lie to me.”
Giles: “Yes, it’s terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after.”
<itunes:summary>Buffy is pleasantly surprised when a friend from her old high school shows up in Sunnydale. Then, she's unpleasantly surprised when Ford catches her staking a vampire. Then she's pleasantly surprised again when he tells her that he already knows she is The Slayer. Then she's unpleasantly surprised when he tries to kill her by trapping her for Spike. Also, Willow sneaks Angel into her room and Giles goes to a Monster Truck Rally.

Directed by: Joss Whedon
Original Air Date: November 3, 1997

Guest Stars:
Julia Lee (Chanterelle)
Jason Behr (Billy 'Ford' Fordham)

Trivia:

Jason Behr (who played Ford) reunited with SMG in 2004's The Grudge
The fake vampire who greets Buffy when she visits the Sunset Club is actually Todd McIntosh, the show's make-up supervisor.

Quotes:

Buffy: "It was terrible. I moped over you for months. Sitting in my room listening to that Divinyls song 'I Touch Myself'...Of course, I had no idea what it was about."
(minutes later...)
Willow: (realizes) "Oh, that's what that song is about?!"

Buffy: "Does it ever get easy?"
Giles: "You mean life?"
Buffy: "Yeah. Does it get easy?"
Giles: "What do you want me to say?"
Buffy: "Lie to me."
Giles: "Yes, it's terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after."
Buffy: "Liar."

Key Events:

Buffy tells Angel she loves him for the first time in this episode.

Trivia:

It is hinted that Principal Snyder knows more about Sunnydale and its foolishness than he is letting on…

Though Spike refers to Angel as his sire, this is not technically correct. It was eventually shown (in Season Five’s “Fool For Love”) that it was actually Drusilla who sired Spike. For many of us, this was no surprise — Joss has been saying for ages that Dru was actually Spike’s sire. For example, on January 2, 1998 (about 3 months after “School Hard” aired), he said, “Angel was Dru’s sire — he made her — and she made Spike. But SIRE doesn’t just mean [the] guy who made you, it means you come from their line. Angel is like a grandfather to Spike.” Whether the line was originally intended with that interpretation, or whether it was a boo-boo that slipped through and Joss justifies that way, Joss has always maintained that in his mind (which is the only place the characters really live), Dru was Spike’s sire. – from BuffyGuide.com
