Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered

Valentine’s Day sucks in Sunnydale.  Cordelia breaks up with Xander to make her silence the mocking of her friends, even though in her heart it’s not what she wants.  In his heartbroken state, Xander blackmails Amy to cast a love spell, but it goes horribly awry and every woman in Sunnydale, except Cordy, becomes pathologically attracted to him. In an odd turn, a smitten Dru saves Xander from Angelus, but who will save Xander from the screaming horde of psycho women?

Trivia:

  • In the beginning of the episode, Oz fixates on the cheerleading trophy that contains Amy’s mom from the first season episode, “Witch”.
  • Giles’ first car seen on the show was an ancient silver Citroen, first seen in “The Witch”. The license plate was 2GPU947. During the filming of “Phases” the car refused to start so some members of the Buffy crew had to push the car from behind. They can be seen through the rear window in one scene.

Quotes:
Willow: “Well, I like you. You’re nice, and you’re funny. And you don’t smoke. Yeah, okay, werewolf, but that’s not all the time. I mean, three days out of the month I’m not much fun to be around either.”

Cordelia: “Sorry, we haven’t all perfected that phony ‘girl next door’ bit.”
Willow: “You could be the girl next door, too. If Xander lived next to a brothel!”

Key Events:

  • Oz becomes a werewolf in this episode, a defining characteristic of his character for the remainder of the series.
  • Zander discovers that Larry’s misogynist ways are a smoke screen…Larry is gay and he thinks Zander is also gay.

Bad Eggs

The scoobies are taken to “sitcom plot device land” as they are each given an egg to look after as an exercise in parenting.  Of course, since this IS Sunnydale, the eggs do not contain sweet, fuzzy chicks, but rather vile, facesucking, mind-controlling “bezoars”.  Luckily, Buffy and Xandor manage to avoid being taken over by the nasty creatures, and rush off to save their friends from…whatever that is under the school. Also, in this episode, we are introduced to two of the meanest, toughest, rootin-tootin-est vampires to ever walk the vast plains of California! (Those Gorch brothers rock!)

Directed by: David Greenwalt
Original Air Date: January 12, 1998
Guest Stars:
Jeremy Ratchford (Lyle Gorch)
James Parks (Tector Gorch)

Trivia:

  • Lyle and Tector Gorch where two characters from the 1969 movie “The Wild Bunch“, which starred William Holden and Ernest Borgnine.
  • We learn in this episode that Angel can’t have children.

Quotes:
Giles: “I suppose there is a sort of Machiavellian ingenuity to your transgression.”
Xander: “I resent that… or, possibly, thank you.”

Tector: “That the Slayer?”
Lyle: “Yep.”
Tector: “Ain’t that Angelus with her?”
Lyle: “Yep.”
Tector: “Well, how come she ain’t slayin’? And how come he’s about to make me blush?”
