Unable to deal with the pain caused by being forced to kill Angel, Buffy heads to L.A. to try and leave it all behind…Sunnydale, her friends, even her name. There, she goes by “Anne” and works in a diner, waiting tables. But trouble has a way of finding Buffy, and this time trouble comes in the form of Lily (who was known as Chanterelle in “Lie To Me” last season). Lily has lost her boyfriend, Rickie, and has enlisted the help of Buffy to find him. Meanwhile, the scoobies in Sunnydale learn that it ain’t easy to slay vampires without a slayer. Let’s just hope Buffy can escape that creepy forced labor hell demension to get back to Sunnydale and give them all a hand once more.

The Sadie Hawkins dance is coming up and Buffy is off the dating track… “forever”. There are two love birds that still have some issues to work out, to bad they are both dead. Giles thinks the ghostly activity is Jenny trying to finish up some unresolved issues while the rest of the gang just want to get the deadly incident to stop repeating. Eventually our dead star crossed lovers find the best hosts for their deadly rerun in Buffy and Angelus but not quite the way one might expect.

Angelus has murder on his mind and Buffy’s friends and family are his targets. Jenny Calendar is still on the outs with the scooby gang but gives Giles a spell book containing a ritual to keep Angelus out of the their homes, all the while she is secretly working on her own “special project”—a computer translation of the ancient Gypsy Ritual of Restoration, the spell which originally gave Angelus his soul back. She succeeds, but Drusilla senses Jenny’s intentions and Angelus pays Jenny a visit to destroy all her work and put an end to her life. With extra flair, Angelus uses his sick and twisted abilities to torture Giles. Though devastated as well by Jenny’s death, Buffy stops Giles from getting himself killed seeking revenge on Angelus. By the time Jenny is laid to rest, Buffy understands the full consequences of allowing Angelus to continue his reign of terror and finds herself, finally, ready to slay him.

According to Joss Whedon, Jenny Calendar’s death serves notice to fans, first, that no one is safe, death is scary and real, and second, that Angel is not “just a little evil,” he’s not “grouchy,” he’s truly evil and Buffy needs to address the situation. The series creator also jokes that the episode is a message to the actors: “Be very good, or I’ll kill you.”
In an interview with the BBC, Anthony Stewart Head says this is his favorite episode, “because it was a beautifully shot episode and a beautifully written one.
Although Jenny is killed off in this episode, the actress makes two further guest appearances: in the second part of the season finale where Drusilla hypnotizes Giles into thinking she’s Jenny and again in the season 3 episode Amends as a manifestation of the First Evil, intending to turn Angel evil again.

In his heartbroken state, Xander blackmails Amy to cast a love spell, but it goes horribly awry and every woman in Sunnydale, except Cordy, becomes pathologically attracted to him. In an odd turn, a smitten Dru saves Xander from Angelus, but who will save Xander from the screaming horde of psycho women?

Angelus starts some trouble. Willow convinces Oz she still wants to see him, despite everything.

The scoobies are taken to “sitcom plot device land” as they are each given an egg to look after as an exercise in parenting. Of course, since this IS Sunnydale, the eggs do not contain sweet, fuzzy chicks, but rather vile, facesucking, mind-controlling “bezoars”. Luckily, Buffy and Xandor manage to avoid being taken over by the nasty creatures, and rush off to save their friends from…whatever that is under the school. Also, in this episode, we are introduced to two of the meanest, toughest, rootin-tootin-est vampires to ever walk the vast plains of California! (Those Gorch brothers rock!)

And, as with most things that take place on the Hellmouth, this cure requires a sacrifice…in this case, the sire of Drusilla, Angel. And Xander and Cordillia kiss. A lot.

A series of grisly murders of really stuffy British people lead straight to Giles, who gets drunk and pissy in response. Buffy and the gang rush to his rescue anyway, and Jenny Calendar becomes possessed by Eyghon, an ancient demon that Giles and his friends used to summon when they were younger to get high. Unluckily, Ethan Raine, a shady character from Giles past, never got the memo, and casts a spell that causes everyone that bought a costume in his shop to transform into whatever they are wearing. Buffy turns all powerless and weepy. Xander, luckily, turns into a hardnosed soldier. Willow turns into a scantily clad ghost (nice!) and everyone else turns into monsters. Oh yeah, and Spike shows up. Neat!

It is hinted that Principal Snyder knows more about Sunnydale and its foolishness than he is letting on…
Though Spike refers to Angel as his sire, this is not technically correct. It was eventually shown (in Season Five’s “Fool For Love”) that it was actually Drusilla who sired Spike. For many of us, this was no surprise — Joss has been saying for ages that Dru was actually Spike’s sire. For example, on January 2, 1998 (about 3 months after “School Hard” aired), he said, “Angel was Dru’s sire — he made her — and she made Spike. But SIRE doesn’t just mean [the] guy who made you, it means you come from their line. When She Was Bad

Buffy’s back for the first episode of Season 2!After a summer with her father in L.A., Buffy returns to Sunnydale noticeably less sunny. Her near death experience at the hand of the Master months before has given her a serious case of the wiggins, and she’s not handling it well. (Highlight of the episode, watch poor Xander squirm while Buffy tries to seduce him with the dance of the veiled bitca!)

Meanwhile The Annointed One has hatched a plan to resurrect The Master…unfortunately for our Scoobies, that requires the sacrifice of everyone that had been in the vicinity of The Master when he died…in this case, Willow, Miss Calendar, Giles and Cordelia. Buffy realizes the importance of her friends when she is forced to save them and her less bitchy, more quippy self returns.

The High School that was used for Sunnydale High is Torrance High School. The courtyard seen throughout the series is actually the Senior Patio. Uber-Buffy fans will also note that there is no ‘bell tower’, the one where Johnathan was confronted by Buffy. The area around Torrance High did experience a real earthquake in 1933, a fact that made it’s way into the story of The Master.
